A SERIES of attacks rocked the southern border province of Yala early yesterday including a grenade attack at a military base at about 1am, which wounded three soldiers.

The province was also hit by a number of arson attacks with targets including a telephone pole, a power pole and four security cameras.

Business owner Kittisak Mahittimontri told officials that he suspected his Yala logging plant might have also been hit by arsonists.

“The fire suddenly started at about 1am and spread through [the facility]. The damage must be at least Bt50 million,” he said.

Once they arrived at the scene, firefighters took several hours to control the blaze, which was finally extinguished at about 8.30am.

Meanwhile, National Police Office deputy spokesman Colonel Krisana Pattanacharoen yesterday said there was no connection between the public referendum and a Sunday bomb attack on a convoy transporting referendum ballot boxes in Pattani province, which wounded a teacher and two junior policemen.

“It’s part of the ongoing unrest [in the deep South],” he said.
